Golden Kamuy: Saishuushou
Satoru Noda, Shizutaka Suguhara
#anime #seinen #adventure #historical

Thoughts

At the beginning of the 20th century, in Hokkaido, an Ainu tale claims a large cache of gold had been hidden by a group of Ainu miners. One of them is said to have murdered his companions, and while imprisoned, would have tattooed the map to the gold onto his fellow inmates.
Sugimoto Saichi, a Russo-Japanese War veteran, teams up with Asirpa, a young Ainu hunter whose father is one of the murdered Ainu, in the hope of finding the treasure. On their adventures, they'll have to both face as enemy and team up with a lot of colorful characters including the 7th division of the Imperial Japanese Army, Russian revolutionaries and the last living samurai...

I just finished the final season of Golden Kamuy (which I was very happy to learn is not the end of the anime!) today and what can I say except I just love this anime and the manga it is based upon.
Golden Kamuy is easily one of my favorites seinen, it has everything: thrilling action, dramatic backstories, hilarious comedy, complex characters with endearing relationships, gorgeous artsyle, and the list goes on.
Nothing is ever black or white in this work, every character is morally ambiguous and has a personal motivation that is revealed as the series progresses. You learn to love each of those characters, to feel for them and mourn their past, protagonists and antagonists alike, because between two ultra-violent action scenes, Satoru Noda still manages to insert a tear-jerking flashback or a comedy scene that shows the characters in a new light.
I cannot recommend this manga enough, and I'm so glad the anime really does it justice.

A very very short story about a princess fascinated with dragons and their selfish hoarding habits. I can't say much as it is 10 pages long but the art is gorgeous.
Please read it here!

Thoughts

In a distant time, somewhere in space, in a temple erected to the glory of the Radiant Goddess who defeated the Old God many years ago and liberated humankind, lives a nameless acolyte whose feelings for the Goddess she's sworn to serve exceed simple devotion. One day, she accidentally summons the Goddess into the temple, and the Goddess chooses to stay.

I really liked this webcomic! The pixelated artstyle is beautiful and feels very mystical, and the relationships between all the characters were complex enough to be compelling. It was overall very cute, but some parts were really dark, bordering on body horror, which gave a real depth to the work.

There is much more I could say, I really liked the psychology of some of the characters but I can't tell much more without spoiling the story. It's actually quite short so if you're interested you should definitely read it here!

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game Part 1

Thoughts

I never know what to think of jjk, I know it's supposed to be a great shonen, but something is just not clicking for me. I think it really is a matter of taste because I can see it's an anime with a lot of qualities, and I get why people are obsessed with it: lots of great characters, good intrigue, numerous plot twists, intense fight scenes. I really want to like this anime more than I do so I keep watching it season after season, but even though I don't dislike it, it never wins my heart. Maybe I should read the manga?

I will try to list a few things I liked in this season to remember them: seeing more of Okkotsu and Rika, everything about Higuruma (excellent character design: who doesn't love a depressed middle-aged man in a suit? and I just love complex characters that have such strong morals the world can't keep up and their moral compass ends up shattering abruptly), less Itadori and more minor characters screen time, the naked pink-haired lady that can bend the sky

Things I didn't like: I miss Gojo :-(, the whole season was wayyy too wordy with the rules for the game and everything, I had to pause the video to make sure I'd really understand everything, characters explaining how they're going to be defeated literally two minutes before it happens, perhaps too many minor characters that we only see for one episode?

Thoughts

"Kutsuna Satoru, a hatter, picks up a man collapsed by the side of the road. This man, Kashiba Ryou, has come to Japan to die.…"

I really enjoyed this story!
I was a bit weirded out by the age gap at the beginning, but the characters are so nuanced, I think the author makes it work out in the end. I found myself rooting for them without even realizing it. The side characters are a bit underdeveloped to my taste, but I grew really attached to the two main characters during those three volumes. I think their relationship was very subtly told and I liked how they built a strong relationship, being able to rely on each other throughout the progression of the story. It was not only a romance but also and foremost a beautiful tale of overcoming grief and finding your purpose in life despite the hardships and the losses.
And the artstyle was just gorgeous, too.
I know there's a spinoff focusing on the mafiosi, I'll probably give it a try. (I dont know what's with bl authors and mafiosi, it seems they're really facsinated by this subject...)

Thoughts

Long story short to not spoil anything: Yaharu, a depressed mangaka unexpectedly meets Jun, a popular and seemingly cheerful mangaka who wants to take care of him.
I didn't read the tags for this one and I expected a cute romance, I cannot emphasize how wrong I was. This is anything but a fluffy romance, this is a tragic psychological story about a twisted and imbalanced relationship. And yet, this was beautiful. I'm amazed at how imperfect and fucked up the two main characters were, their flaws and their relationship felt so human. As someone who struggles with heavy depression, this is probably one of the first time I see it depicted so truthfully in a manga, the sheer violence of it, how it can make you feel like you're drowning all the time, psychologically and physically. I recognized my past self a lot in Yaharu and his words, especially the last chapters. Jun is also very well-written, there are so many layers to him. I can't detail his character much without spoiling the story, but I really enjoyed it.
This was a very unique read, I'm glad I stumbled upon this work.

Memories of Matsuko
Nakashima Tetsuya
#movie #musical #tragicomedy

Thoughts

Wow, what a wild ride. This left me so depressed I had to take a nap afterwards, but such an amazing movie!
After the passing of an aunt he never met, Matsuko, Sho is tasked by his father to sort her things at her apartment. From then on, he will discover pieces of Matsuko's mysterious and bizarre past through people who had an impact on her life, getting to know her peculiar character piece by piece by exploring the memories.
I absolutely adored this movie, it was both grotesque and colorful while depicting the tragic life of a woman craving affection her whole life. Matsuko faces unjust situations, physically abusive boyfriends, abandonment, and the movie doesn't divert from showing us the raw horrors that shaped her somewhat miserable life, all while being a flamboyant musical full of absurd visual effects.
The contrast really worked for me, as the colorful filter of the movie reminded me of the joyful mask Matsuko wore her whole life, trying desperately to find her happiness despite it all.
This is not an easy watch, the themes are really heavy and the atrocities are somewhat multiplied by the naive musical numbers dispersed through the movie, but it really spoke to me. I spent the last ten minutes crying, grieving for Matsuko (I'm a crybaby, but still...) and I know I will think about it often.

Hanamonogatari
Yoshiya Nobuko, Ozawa Mari
#manga #yuri #tragic #adaptation

Thoughts

A collection of short stories about bittersweet relationships between high school girls in the 1920s, adapted from the work of lesbian author Yoshiya Nobuko.
This was so beautiful, young women becoming infatuated with each other, facing society's expectations as well as the difficult living of this period, especially for girls. Some relationships were depicted more as sisterly bonds, but some were more explicit on the fact that those were indeed tales of romance, often picturing unrequited love or tragic endings.
The art is exquisitely delicate, very fitting for those nuanced and chaste stories.

Thoughts

I got into this season without expecting anything, to be frank I haven't even watched season 1. I mean I tried to, but maybe I was expecting too much of it, being really attached to the original material and everything, and it didn't really land for me.
But I still decided to give this season a try, and oh boy what a great decision, because I loved it! I cried so much. Cried for Laboon (I mean, of course, how can a whale that loves music and has been waiting for its friends for years to hear them play again not move you?), cried for Igaram (wasn't expecting that one), and obviously cried for Hiriluk. I am passionate about Hiriluk's backstory, he's one of my favourite characters in the whole manga. His hope and love for mankind give me so much inspiration. I thought the actor did a fantastic job at depicting both his goofiness and undefeatable resolve, but most of all his love for Chopper. I shed so much tears during episode 7, I just could not stop crying.
I thought the whole cast was great, some better than others (Mackenyu's kind of monotonous performance of Zoro doesnt entirely do him justice for me) but I liked it as a whole. Especially Usopp and Vivi, they were exactly how I pictured them to be.
On another note, the costumes were so good?? So so camp, and the costume designers took a lot of inspiration from Oda's artworks for the crew, which I really appreciated because you can tell he always has a lot of fun with fashion designs in those.
Fun fact: I first got into yaoi because of One Piece lol I was obsessed with ZoSan when I was a teenager back in 2009. Um, still kinda am, actually... Maybe I'll do a post on my favourite ZoSan fanfics and fanarts one day. Or even a ZoSan shrine.
I'll finish by saying this: Live action Kureha is the most beautiful woman everrr byeeee

Uh this was all right I guess? Like it was cute but not great, and kinda déjà vu. Two childhood friends, one confesses to the other, they start dating... There was nothing really remarkable about it, I don't really know what to say. The art was just okay and the characters felt a bit boring and unidimensional to me.

Thoughts

This is a re-read for me but i love this one!
When Ririko passes away, she leaves behind her a six year old daughter, Meguru, and a will stating that Meguru's father is either Touma and Sentarou, with whom she had a relationship at the same time several years ago. According to her will, both men now have to cohabit with each other and young Meguru for three months before the girl chooses herself who her father will be.
Okay, I know, the set-up for this story is a bit crazy but bear with me, because the characters are so well-written that despite how bizarre it is, it works perfectly.
Every character is flawed, they all have unique personnalities and the author shows us the good and the bad (especially the bad) in every one of them. They are all likeable in their own way, each fighting battles we learn about gradually along the progression of the manga.
Each of them is written with a lot of nuances, none of their depiction was caricatural at all. The romance is endearing, doesn't feel forced and becomes almost auxiliary, because the focus is really put on how every relationship intertwines and the inner turmoils of these characters.
And it doesn't hurt that the artstyle is absolutely gorgeous. Like come on the chapter covers are so beautiful, how is it possible to deliver such amazing compositions? The use of color is particularly well done too.
I have yet to read another work from Tsurukame Mayo, but I'll definitely check them out!

Thoughts

This was a very fun read!
We follow the adventures of the Rabbit Princess in her kingdom, surrounded by animals with very colorful personalities. Caustic humor is ever-present, often endearing, though some stories occasionally take a dark and ironic turn, giving some depth to this work. The illustrations are truly charming and expressive, with very gentle lines, and the contrast between the cute design and the mildly dark humor was really effective.
It's full of short, interconnected stories, making it a very quick read if you decide to give it a go.

Thoughts

I was expecting to really enjoy this series because I love detective stories, but I didn't connect with this anime very much.
The story follows Reiko, a young and wealthy heiress who also works as a detective for the police, partnered with Inspector Kazamatsuri. Neither of them is particularly good at their job, and Reiko is helped by her mysterious butler, Kageyama, to solve the cases. The series focuses on one or two crimes per episode, making it easy to watch, and the emphasis is on comedy rather than suspense.
Unfortunately, it's a humor that didn't really work for me. I found it too repetitive and heavy-handed, the characters are annoying, and you sometimes wonder how Reiko and the inspector ended up in this profession, given how poorly they do their jobs. The investigations are also a bit sloppy, and the solutions weren't very clever or difficult to figure out.

The story is adapted from a novel though and special mention goes to the magnificent covers illustrated by Yuusuke Nakamura.

"The world, chico, and everything in it."
Finally took time to watch this classic!
On one hand, it was a tragic story about greed and loneliness, and how being obsessed by power and status can devour you whole and paradoxically leave you weak. I loved the unsubtlety of this movie, I thought it was really efficient and perfectly served the purpose. The imagery was beautiful, so many great shots, and the costumes were amazing too! Really flashy, I loved it.
On the other hand, the movie as a whole was sooo misogynistic, this really threw me off, especially the treatment of Elvira's character. She's not shown as having any emotions other than boredom, and we know nothing about her desires besides wanting to be rich and lose herself in drugs and party. I would have loved to learn more about her, her past, how she ended up a mafia wife, how lonely she must have felt. Her most interesting moment for me was when she left Tony, letting her angriness explode in the scene of the restaurant, where Tony is shown more pathetic than ever.
I have mixed feelings about this movie, but this still is a poignant story, the rise and fall of a man consumed by his desire to escape a life of misery at any cost, and I'm glad I watched it. (besides, it's very often cited by rappers in france, I understand rap lyrics much better now lol)

Thoughts

Not sure how I feel about this one. The artwork was beautiful, with gorgeous details, but I'm not really hooked on the relationship between the two main characters.
I thought Joel was the most interesting of the two, and I quite liked him. While being a mysterious political influence in his country, he lives in a state of loneliness and insecurity and suffers from having no friend he can trust.
Adam, on the other hand, really irritated me. I thought he was too stubborn and carefee, to the point of being forceful, ignoring Joel's feelings. I sense there is much to his personality and he will probably be more psychologically developed in the next chapters but I'm a bit disappointed by him as a character for now.
The political intrigue based on religious tensions made me curious though, so maybe I'll give the rest a try?

Thoughts

"Just because it feels good doesn't mean it's wrong."

I have no idea how to comment on that book, because it made me feel so much at the same time: disgust, fondness, embarassment, catharsis, a sprinkle of lust also, all intertwined through the sentences, leaving me confused.
The first part was definitely a tough read, as we're immersed in the mind of Rachel, the main character, a self-hating young woman struggling with an eating disorder. We become one with her and the twisted rules she (or her mother before her) established for herself, and I could feel old habits resurface under my skin as I was watching her count the calories, fighting with her body to achieve an idealized femininity.
I think Melissa Broder did well at crafting this tale of appetite and self-discovery, but I also have to admit the romance part left a sour taste in my mouth. Rachel spends the whole book testing the limits, crossing the lines, trying to manipulate others to avoid being rejected or worse abandoned. To me her obsession with Myriam bordered on fetishization, and the description of her body sometimes felt more like dehumanization rather than worship.
I can't make up my mind about what I thought of this book, but it definitely left an impression on me.

Thoughts

This was absolutely terrible. I hated every page of it even though I wanted to like it because it was recommended by a friend. The psychology of the characters wasn't really developped but this is not what made me dislike this.
No, what really disturbed me is how triggering it was content-wise. I'm very sensitive to consent, and in this manga it was simply non-existent. Every sexual encounter was purely an assault. And don't get me started on the relationship between one of the students and the school nurse because I'm afraid I'm gonna go feral.
My friend told me that this is what I should expect when I read yaoi but I have to disagree. This is not because the genre as a whole is widely based on power dynamics that I will settle for litteral aggressions, especially when I know that yaoi romances have so much more to offer.
